Solar PV System Upgrades Across Northumberland
Many Northumberland solar systems were designed before their owners had an electric car, a heat pump or a home office. Solar Panel Price helps homeowners across Northumberland compare several quotes for extending, modernising or improving an existing PV system, while keeping the panels and wiring already in place.
Popular Solar Upgrades in Northumberland
- Array extensions – using spare roof space, often an east or west slope left out originally
- Panel-level electronics – reducing losses from shading on part of the roof
- A home battery – storing surplus generation for the evening
- Solar immersion diverters – heating water with surplus solar instead of exporting it
- EV charger integration – charging your car from excess generation
- Monitoring upgrades – replacing an old display or dead data logger with app-based monitoring
FiT, SEG and Your Upgrade
If your original system earns Feed-in Tariff payments, an extension needs careful handling. The extension is normally installed on its own circuit and meter, and your FiT supplier must be told about the change. The added panels need MCS certification if you want export payments on them. Any increase in total inverter capacity must also be reported to the network operator.
How Much Does a Solar Upgrade Cost in Northumberland?
| Upgrade | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Hot-water diverter or monitoring upgrade | £500 – £1,000 |
| Optimisers on an existing array | £1,000 – £2,500 |
| Extra panels on a new string with scaffolding | £2,500 – £6,000 |
Larger combined upgrades can go beyond this range. Doing roof-level work in one visit saves on scaffolding.
Upgrades and Planning Rules
Adding panels to a house roof is usually permitted development, under the same limits as the original array. Consent may be needed for listed properties, conservation areas and ground mounts. Local planning information is available from Northumberland Council.
Questions to Ask About an Upgrade
- Are they experienced with your existing inverter brand?
- What paperwork will they handle for your tariff?
- Will new panels be on a separate circuit?
- How much difference will the upgrade make?
A Useful Question for Your Specialist
Before adding equipment, an upgrade specialist should compare your current generation and export with household use. They can check spare roof area, existing inverter and network limits, then weigh additional panels against a battery, optimisers, a hot-water diverter or EV charging integration.
A clear written scope helps you compare what is included before choosing a contractor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some practical answers to common questions about this work.
Can I add panels to a system installed by another company?
Yes. Many installers extend systems fitted by other companies. They will check the existing equipment and design the extension so it works safely alongside it.
Which solar upgrade gives the best return?
It depends on your situation. If you export a lot, a battery or diverter often helps most. If you use more power than you generate, extra panels may be better. Optimisers suit partly shaded roofs.
Do I need a new inverter to extend my system?
Not always. New panels are often connected to their own inverter, or the existing inverter may be replaced with a larger hybrid model if it is due for replacement anyway.
