Why We Built It
Solar has become far more popular since energy prices rose, and the market has grown quickly with it. That brings more choice, but it also makes it harder to tell a well-designed system from one that simply fills the roof with panels. Quotes can describe the same "4kW system" in very different ways, with different panels, inverters, predicted generation figures and warranties, and it is not always obvious which one is the better deal.
Getting a few quotes from local firms is still the most reliable way to see what a job should cost and to spot anything that looks out of line. We wanted to make that step easier: one form, a handful of responses, and a clearer picture of the options.
How the Service Works
- You send an enquiry. Tell us your postcode, the type of solar work and anything useful about the roof, meter or existing system.
- We look for suitable installers. Your details can be shared with up to four businesses that work in your area.
- They contact you directly. Installers may ask for photos, look at satellite imagery or arrange a survey before quoting.
- You decide. Compare the proposals and choose whether to go ahead with any of them. There is no obligation.
How many installers respond depends on the job and local availability. Rural postcodes and very small repair jobs may attract fewer responses than a full installation in a large town.
The Installers We Work With
Businesses joining the network are asked to provide company details, provide relevant insurance details and references, confirm the services and areas they cover, and agree to our referral terms. We expect them to give clear information about equipment, pricing and paperwork when they speak to you.
We do not inspect installations or guarantee the work of any installer, so it is worth making a few checks yourself before signing. For a new system, ask for the installer's MCS certification number and confirm it on the MCS website. Ask which consumer code they belong to, whether your deposit is protected, and whether their workmanship warranty is insurance-backed so it survives if the business stops trading. Ask how any notifiable electrical work will be certified under the rules where you live; registration with a competent person scheme or building control sign-off may be relevant.
What Makes Solar Quotes Hard to Compare
Unlike many home improvement jobs, a solar quote is partly a forecast. Alongside the price, each installer is predicting how much electricity the system will generate and how much of it you will use yourself. Those forecasts depend on assumptions about roof orientation, shading, your consumption pattern and, where a battery is included, how you will charge and discharge it.
When you compare quotes, look at the assumptions as well as the headline savings. A proposal that shows the MCS generation estimate, explains any shading factor and bases self-consumption on your actual bills is usually more trustworthy than one that promises a very short payback without showing the working.
