Upgrade Your Solar System in Nelson, Lancashire
Plenty of Nelson homeowners with older solar systems are now looking to extend or modernise them. One enquiry can reach up to four local installers who add panels, batteries, optimisers and diverters to existing arrays, so you can compare the options and prices.
Choosing an Upgrade for Your Nelson Home
The best upgrade depends on what you want to fix. Where most of your solar goes back to the grid, storage or a diverter makes better use of it. If you now use far more electricity than the system produces, extra panels may be the answer. Where shade is holding the system back, panel-level electronics can help.

How Much Does a Solar Upgrade Cost in Nelson?
Expect upgrades in Nelson to range from around £500 to £6,000. A diverter or monitoring upgrade sits at the lower end, while roof extensions needing scaffolding cost the most. Combined projects, such as panels plus a battery, can cost more.
FiT and SEG Considerations
If the original system receives Feed-in Tariff payments, extensions are usually metered separately and your FiT supplier must be told. The added panels need MCS certification if you want export payments on them.
Planning Rules for Upgrades in Nelson
Adding panels to a house roof normally does not need a planning application, within the same limits as the original installation. Indoor upgrades rarely need planning consent. Planning in Nelson is handled by Lancashire County Council.

A Useful Question for Your Specialist
If your Nelson system is older, provide its installation date, inverter model, panel count and any Feed-in Tariff paperwork. A specialist can then check whether more panels fit the electrical design or whether storage or a diverter is a better use of the energy you already generate.
A clear written scope helps you compare what is included before choosing a contractor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some practical answers to common questions about this work.
How do I get solar upgrade quotes in Nelson?
Send one enquiry with your postcode, details of your existing system and what you would like to improve. We can match it with up to four specialists covering Nelson.
Can old and new solar panels work together?
Yes, but they are usually wired as separate strings, often with their own inverter, because older and newer panels have different electrical characteristics.
Is it worth upgrading an older solar system?
Often, yes. Upgrading builds on the panels, roof fixings and wiring already in place, which is usually much cheaper than a complete new system.
Will an upgrade affect my Feed-in Tariff?
Not if it is handled correctly. Extensions are normally metered separately so the original FiT payments continue, and your FiT supplier must be informed.
