Solar Upgrade Quotes Across Kent
A solar system installed years ago may no longer match how your household uses electricity. Through one enquiry, households across Kent can compare up to four upgrade quotes from local solar specialists, without starting again from scratch.
Ways to Get More from Your Panels
- Extra panels – adding a new string on unused roof area
- Optimisers or microinverters – letting each panel work independently of shaded neighbours
- Battery storage – keeping daytime solar for use after dark
- Hot-water diverters – sending spare electricity to your hot water cylinder
- Solar-aware EV charging – topping up the car with surplus solar
- Modern monitoring – seeing generation, export and usage on your phone
Protecting Feed-in Tariff Payments in Kent
FiT-registered systems need to be extended in a way that keeps the original tariff intact. New panels are usually wired and metered separately, and your FiT supplier needs to be informed. For the new capacity to earn Smart Export Guarantee payments, it needs its own MCS certificate. Your network operator also needs to know if generating capacity goes up.
Solar Upgrade Costs in Kent
| Upgrade | Typical price range |
|---|---|
| Hot-water diverter or monitoring upgrade | £500 – £1,000 |
| Optimisers on an existing array | £1,000 – £2,500 |
| Extra panels on a new string with scaffolding | £2,500 – £6,000 |
Combining several upgrades, such as extra panels with a hybrid inverter and battery, can cost more. Grouping roof work into one visit avoids paying for scaffolding twice.
Planning and Local Guidance in Kent
Extra roof panels generally follow the same permitted development rules as the first installation. Homes that are listed or in a conservation area, and ground-mounted additions, may need consent. For local planning guidance, contact Kent County Council.
Choosing an Upgrade Specialist in Kent
- Do they regularly work on other companies' systems?
- How will the upgrade affect FiT or SEG payments?
- How will new and old equipment be connected?
- What extra generation or self-consumption do they expect?
Checking the Proposed Work
Before adding equipment, an upgrade specialist should compare your current generation and export with household use. They can check spare roof area, existing inverter and network limits, then weigh additional panels against a battery, optimisers, a hot-water diverter or EV charging integration.
Written details make different proposals easier to compare before choosing a contractor.
Frequently Asked Questions
The answers below cover points homeowners often raise before requesting a quote.
Can I add panels to a system installed by another company?
Yes. Many installers extend systems fitted by other companies. They will check the existing equipment and design the extension so it works safely alongside it.
Which solar upgrade gives the best return?
It depends on your situation. If you export a lot, a battery or diverter often helps most. If you use more power than you generate, extra panels may be better. Optimisers suit partly shaded roofs.
Do I need a new inverter to extend my system?
Not always. New panels are often connected to their own inverter, or the existing inverter may be replaced with a larger hybrid model if it is due for replacement anyway.
