Checking Your Roof Before Getting Quotes
The ideal roof faces somewhere between south-east and south-west, though east–west layouts can suit households who use more power early and late. Shading is the bigger issue: even partial shading from a chimney or tree can pull down a whole string of panels, which is where optimisers or microinverters can help.
Roof coverings around Finstown range from natural slate to plain clay and concrete interlocking tiles, and each uses a different type of roof hook. If your roof is nearing the end of its life, consider re-roofing before the panels go on, since removing and refitting panels later adds cost.
What to Expect on Installation Day in Finstown
- Scaffolding goes up, usually a day or two before the fitting team arrives.
- Roof hooks are secured to the rafters beneath the roof covering.
- Mounting rails are attached and the panels are clamped in place.
- The DC cabling is routed to the inverter, typically in the loft or garage.
- The system is connected to the consumer unit, tested and commissioned.
- Paperwork and app access are handed over so you can apply for export payments.
How Much Does Solar Cost in Finstown?
Homeowners in Finstown can typically expect to pay £4,500–£11,000 for a complete system, depending on how many panels fit the roof, the equipment chosen and how easy the roof is to reach. Smaller arrays sit at the bottom of the range and larger, split systems at the top. Adding a battery at the same time usually adds £3,000–£6,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
These short answers may help you prepare for an installer conversation.
How do I get solar panel quotes in Finstown?
Submit one short enquiry with your postcode and details of the property. We can match it with up to four installers covering Finstown, who may contact you to arrange a survey.
How many solar panels will my house need?
Most homes fit between 8 and 16 panels. The right number depends on your annual electricity use, the usable roof area and whether you plan to add a battery or electric car.
Do solar panels still work in winter?
Yes, but output is much lower than in summer because days are shorter and the sun is lower. Most of a system's annual generation comes between April and September.
Do I need an MCS-certified installer?
For Smart Export Guarantee eligibility in Great Britain, the system normally needs an MCS certificate or equivalent. Ask the installer which certification and handover documents they will provide.
