What Makes a Good Solar Roof in Thurso?
Roofs facing roughly south generate the most, but east and west-facing slopes still produce a useful amount spread across the morning and evening. The main thing to watch for is shade: a chimney, dormer or tall tree casting a shadow for part of the day can reduce output significantly on a simple string system, and panel-level electronics may be recommended.
Many homes in Thurso have roofs finished in slate, clay tiles or concrete interlocking tiles, and the installer will choose fixings to suit. If the roof will need recovering within the next decade, it is usually better to do that first, as taking panels off and refitting them later is an added expense.
The Installation Process in Thurso
- The scaffold is erected ahead of installation.
- Tiles or slates are lifted and roof hooks are fixed to the rafters.
- Rails go on and the panels are fixed and wired together.
- Cables run into the loft to the inverter, isolators and generation meter.
- Final connections are made, the system is tested and switched on.
- You receive the MCS certificate, electrical certificate and monitoring set-up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some practical answers to common questions about this work.

Submit one short enquiry with your postcode and details of the property. We can match it with up to four installers covering Thurso, who may contact you to arrange a survey.
How many solar panels will my house need?
Most homes fit between 8 and 16 panels. The right number depends on your annual electricity use, the usable roof area and whether you plan to add a battery or electric car.
Do solar panels still work in winter?
Yes, but output is much lower than in summer because days are shorter and the sun is lower. Most of a system's annual generation comes between April and September.
Do I need an MCS-certified installer?
For Smart Export Guarantee eligibility in Great Britain, the system normally needs an MCS certificate or equivalent. Ask the installer which certification and handover documents they will provide.
