Solar Battery Installation in Stromness, Orkney Islands
If you have solar in Stromness but still buy most of your evening electricity from the grid, a battery could make a real difference. One enquiry can reach up to four storage specialists covering Stromness and nearby parts of Orkney Islands, who can look at your system and quote for a suitable battery.
How a Solar Battery Works
When your panels produce more than the home needs, the extra goes into the battery rather than being exported. In the evening, the battery discharges to cover lighting, cooking and TV. With an off-peak tariff, the battery can charge cheaply overnight too, which keeps it useful through the darker months.
Adding Storage to Existing Panels
Many enquiries in Stromness come from owners of systems fitted years ago. The simplest route is usually an AC-coupled battery alongside the current inverter, while a hybrid inverter replacement suits systems whose inverter is nearing the end of its life.
What Battery Installers Will Need to Know
- The make and model of your current inverter
- How many panels you have
- Your electricity tariff and annual usage
- The preferred location, such as garage or utility room
- Whether you want backup power during outages
- Upcoming changes to your electricity use
How Much Is a Battery in Stromness?
Expect to pay roughly £3,000–£8,500 for a battery in Stromness, depending mainly on usable capacity and whether the existing inverter is kept. Smaller retrofits are at the bottom of the range, while 13kWh-plus systems with a new hybrid inverter or backup function sit at the top. The current 0% VAT rate on domestic energy-saving installations includes batteries.

Planning permission is not normally needed for an indoor battery. Ask each firm to put the work and exclusions in writing before choosing a contractor.
Frequently Asked Questions
These short answers may help you prepare for an installer conversation.
How do I get solar battery quotes in Stromness?
Send one short enquiry with your postcode and details of your solar system. We can pass it to up to four installers covering Stromness, who may contact you to discuss your usage and arrange a survey.
What size battery should I get?
Most homes choose between 5kWh and 13.5kWh of usable capacity. The installer should size it around your evening and overnight usage rather than simply recommending the biggest model.
Can I charge my battery from the grid at night?
Yes, most modern batteries can be set to charge on a cheap overnight tariff, which keeps them useful in winter when solar generation is low.
Do I need solar panels to have a home battery?
No. A battery can be installed on its own and charged from the grid on an off-peak tariff, although most people pair it with solar panels to store their own generation.
